Places to Stay near Filey for a Family Break
When families look at places to stay near Filey, the choice usually comes down to a base in the town itself or a house a short drive away with more space and its own parking. For many families, staying just outside, about 10 minutes by car, works best. You can be on Filey beach in the morning and back at a quiet house with a garden by teatime. After that, it comes down to the house: the bedrooms, beds for little ones, somewhere to play on a wet day and room for the car.
Filey beach and Filey Brigg
Filey is a smaller seaside town than Scarborough, and for most families the beach is the main reason to go. There is plenty of sand for digging, building and paddling.
At the north end of the bay is Filey Brigg, a rocky point that reaches out into the sea. It makes a good walk and a place to look in rock pools with children. The tide comes in around the rocks, so check the tide times before you head out [1] and leave yourself plenty of time to get back. Keep a close eye on children near the water and follow the RNLI's beach safety advice [2].
The Cleveland Way National Trail also passes along this coast, so there are clifftop walks nearby for older children with good legs.
Places to stay near Filey: in town or just outside?
Staying in Filey means you can walk to the beach and the shops without moving the car. That suits a short break, or a family where no one wants to drive.
Town properties can come with trade-offs, though. Parking may be limited, outdoor space can be small, and summer evenings are busier.
Staying just outside Filey usually gets you more room for the money: a garden, parking off the road and quieter nights, which helps when children need to sleep. The cost is a short drive or bus ride each time you want to go into town. You are also well placed for Scarborough, which is about 10 minutes the other way, so you can mix the two.
What families need from a holiday house
A family break goes more smoothly when the house fits how you live. Before booking, check for:
- Ground-floor bedrooms. Useful for grandparents, for anyone who finds stairs hard at night, and for keeping little ones close.
- Travel cots and a high chair. If the house provides them, that is less to fit in the boot. Ask whether you need to request them in advance.
- More than one bathroom. Two bathrooms make the morning rush and bath time much calmer.
- Somewhere for wet days. A games room or a cupboard of board games can save an afternoon when the rain comes in.
- Parking for everyone. If grandparents or another family are driving separately, count the cars and ask how many fit.
- A washing machine. Sandy towels and muddy clothes pile up quickly.
- An enclosed garden. Children can play outside without anyone watching the gate.
Days out from a base near Filey
A house between Filey and Scarborough puts a lot within reach. In Scarborough, families often head for SEA LIFE Scarborough, Peasholm Park or Scarborough Castle. Bridlington and RSPB Bempton Cliffs are about 30 minutes away, and in spring and early summer Bempton is known for its puffins [3]. The North York Moors are about 20 minutes away when you want a change from the beach.

How Castle Sunset on the Beach fits
Castle Sunset on the Beach is a clifftop house above Cayton Bay, about 10 minutes by car from Filey and from Scarborough. A bus to both towns stops at the top of the street.
It sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms (two kings and two twins). Two of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, and there are 2 bathrooms. Travel cots are provided and a high chair is available on request. There is a games room with a pool table and darts, board games, a washing machine, an enclosed garden with a private hot tub, and parking for 3 cars.
Some honest points for families. There is no dishwasher. A steep cliff path leads down to the beach at Cayton Bay, and it is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility, so pushchairs and grandparents may be better off driving to a beach with easier access. The minimum stay is 7 nights in the summer holidays and 3 nights at half-terms and Easter.
