October Half-Term on the Yorkshire Coast: A Family Plan

5 October 2026
Family Holidays
A relaxed three to five day half-term plan for families: beach mornings, a rainy-day backup, and warm evenings in a clifftop house above Cayton Bay.

A family break at October half term on the Yorkshire coast works best with a loose plan: outdoor time in the morning, an indoor backup for wet days and early evenings in. The clocks go back during the week, so it gets dark sooner than you might expect. This three to five day plan mixes beach, rainy-day options and cosy nights, using Cayton Bay, between Scarborough and Filey, as your base.

October half term, Yorkshire coast: what to know first

Half-term dates vary between schools, so check yours before you book anything. At Castle Sunset on the Beach the minimum stay at half-term is three nights. Self check-in with a key lock box is from 4pm, and check-out is by 10am.

The clocks go back on the night of Saturday 24 October. By Monday 26 October the sun sets over the bay at about 16:39, so plan outdoor time for the morning and early afternoon.

There is an offer for this half-term. Use code HALFTERM15 for 15% off midweek stays of 3 or more nights between Sunday 25 and Thursday 29 October 2026, booked direct.

The house sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms (two kings and two twins), with two bedrooms on the ground floor and 2 bathrooms. Travel cots are provided, and a high chair is available on request. More detail is on our family house page.

Day 1: arrive, settle in and watch the sunset

Arrive from 4pm, unpack and let the children explore. With an early sunset, you may see it from the floor-to-ceiling windows while the kettle boils. The glass looks across the sea to Scarborough Castle, which is a good way to point out tomorrow's trip.

Keep the first evening simple. Something easy for tea, a board game, and an early night.

Day 2: beach morning, castle afternoon

A steep cliff path leads from the house down to the big sandy beach at Cayton Bay. It is fine for steady walkers but not suitable for anyone with limited mobility, and carrying little ones and beach kit adds to the effort. If that does not suit your group, Scarborough South Bay is about 10 minutes by car.

Wrap up, take a flask and keep an eye on the tide. The RNLI has clear beach safety advice that is worth reading with older children before you go [1].

In the afternoon, if the weather is kind, head to Scarborough Castle. Run by English Heritage, it sits high above the town with big views over both bays [2]. Check the official site for opening times and prices before you set off.

Day 3: a rainy-day plan

October weather can change quickly, so check the Met Office forecast the night before [3] and swap days around if you need to.

On a wet day, Scarborough has indoor options. SEA LIFE Scarborough and the Rotunda Museum are both under cover, and the Stephen Joseph Theatre may have a family show on. Check each official site for times, prices and what is on.

Or stay in. The games room has a pool table and darts, there are board games, and the Wi-Fi is fast 300Mbps Starlink if someone wants a film. A slow day indoors is part of a good holiday too.

Days 4 and 5: Filey, the moors or a quiet day

If you are staying longer, there is plenty within a short drive:

  • Filey, about 10 minutes away. Walk the long beach and out towards Filey Brigg, keeping an eye on the tide.
  • The North York Moors National Park, about 20 minutes away, for a change of scene and a muddy walk.
  • RSPB Bempton Cliffs, about 30 minutes away. Puffins are a spring and early summer sight, so do not expect them in October, but the cliffs are still worth the trip.
A bus to Scarborough and Filey stops at the top of the street, which gives the driver a day off. For more ideas, see our things to do page.

Evenings in

Evenings are where this time of year comes into its own. Light the fire, get the board games out or start a pool tournament. The private hot tub sits in the enclosed garden; older children will love a dip under the dark sky, with an adult watching at all times.

A couple of honest notes. There is no dishwasher, so set up a washing-up rota on day one. The washing machine is handy for sandy, muddy clothes. Up to 2 well-behaved dogs are welcome if the family dog is coming too.
