Cayton Bay is a sweeping, sandy bay on the Yorkshire coast, tucked between Scarborough and Filey. It is quieter than the big resort beaches, but close enough to them that you can enjoy both. This guide covers what we love about the bay itself and the best days out within easy reach of Castle Sunset on the Beach, our clifftop holiday home above the bay.
The beach
A steep path from the clifftop leads down to the beach, a big stretch of sand that rarely feels crowded. The path is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Once you are down, the beach is ideal for long family walks, picnics, kite flying and simply watching the waves. Check the tide times before you set off: the beach is at its most generous at low tide, and you will want to keep an eye on the water coming back in.

Surfing
Cayton Bay is one of the best-known surf spots on the Yorkshire coast, and you will often see surfers in the water whatever the season. If you are new to it, look for a local surf school offering lessons and board hire; experienced surfers will want to check the forecast and conditions before paddling out. The washing machine at the house is handy for rinsing out wetsuits and towels afterwards.
Rock pooling
At low tide, the rocky edges of the bay reveal pools full of crabs, anemones and small fish. Bring a bucket, wear shoes with good grip, and remember to put everything back where you found it. It is one of the simplest and best ways to spend a morning with children.
Clifftop walks
The clifftops around Cayton Bay offer wide sea views in both directions. Walk north towards Scarborough and you will see its castle on the headland; head south and the coast unfolds towards Filey. Stick to marked paths and keep well back from the edge, especially in wet or windy weather. Back at the house, the view across the bay to Scarborough Castle is one of the reasons guests return, particularly at sunset.

Scarborough (about 10 minutes)
Scarborough is a short drive up the coast. Explore Scarborough Castle, stroll the harbour, visit SEA LIFE Scarborough or relax in Peasholm Park. For rainy days, try the Alpamare water park or catch a show at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. You can also check what's on during your stay.
Filey (about 10 minutes)
Filey is a smaller, gentler seaside town with a long sandy beach and the rocky promontory of Filey Brigg to explore. It is a lovely spot for an afternoon stroll and an ice cream.
Bridlington (about half an hour)
Head south to Bridlington for a classic seaside harbour town with plenty for families.
Whitby (about 45 minutes)
Whitby, with its abbey ruins, harbour and famous fish and chips, makes a brilliant day trip up the coast.
Puffins at RSPB Bempton Cliffs (about half an hour)
The chalk cliffs at RSPB Bempton Cliffs are home to huge seabird colonies, and seeing puffins there is a highlight for many visitors. Check the RSPB's website before you go, as puffins are seasonal visitors.
Getting around
There is free parking at the house, and a bus to Scarborough and Filey runs from the top of the street, so you do not need to drive every day.
