Holiday Homes with a Private Hot Tub near Scarborough: What to Look For

Travel Tips
A hot tub can make a coastal break, but only if it is private, sheltered and well looked after. Here is what to check before you book one near Scarborough.

If you are searching for a holiday home with a hot tub near Scarborough, the coast either side of the town gives you plenty of choice. The things that make the biggest difference are simple. Is the tub private or shared? Is the garden enclosed? What can you see from it, and who looks after it? Get those right and the hot tub becomes the part of the trip everyone talks about. Get them wrong and it can feel like sitting in a car park.

Private or shared: the first thing to check

Some sites have hot tubs that several lodges share, or tubs you book by the hour. Others come with the property and are yours for the whole stay.

A shared tub can be fine for a quick dip. A private one means you can use it when you like: first thing with a coffee, after a wet walk, or late once the children are asleep. You also know who used it last.

Listings do not always make this clear. Look for the word "private", and if it is not there, ask.

Enclosed gardens and privacy

Where the tub sits matters as much as the tub itself. A hot tub on an open patio facing a road or a neighbour's window is not very relaxing.

An enclosed garden gives you privacy. It also helps if you have small children or a dog, because you are not keeping one eye on the gate. Ask the host whether the garden is fully enclosed and whether the tub is overlooked. A wide photo of the garden often tells you more than a close-up of the bubbles.

Views and the time of year

On this coast, it is worth asking what you can see from the tub and from the rooms around it. A view of the sea or the sky changes how an evening feels.

Think about when you are travelling, too. In summer, sunset at Cayton Bay is late: about 21:39 around 21 June. On 26 October, after the clocks go back, it is about 16:39, and on 21 December it is about 15:39. That means a winter soak often happens in the dark, under the stars if the sky is clear. A summer one might run into a long, light evening. Check the forecast before you plan around it [1], because wind and rain on this coast can change quickly.

Hot tub etiquette and safety basics

A few habits keep the tub pleasant for your group and for the guests after you.

  • Shower before you get in. Sun cream, lotion and make-up cloud the water.
  • Keep glass away from the tub. Use plastic cups.
  • Always supervise children, in and around the water.
  • Do not mix hot tubs and alcohol. Heat and drink together can leave people dizzy or unwell.
  • Keep sessions short, and get out to cool down if you feel lightheaded.
  • If you are pregnant or have a medical condition, check with your doctor first.
  • Put the cover back on when you finish. It keeps the heat in and leaves out.
  • Read and follow any instructions the host leaves for the tub.
The short version: treat it like a shared bathroom, even when it is private.

Questions to ask before booking a holiday home with hot tub in Scarborough or nearby

Before you pay, it is worth asking:

  • Is the hot tub private to this property for the whole stay?
  • Is the garden enclosed, and is the tub overlooked?
  • Will it be ready to use when we arrive?
  • Who cleans and checks the water, and how often?
  • Are there house rules, such as a time to finish in the evening?
  • If we bring a dog, can it use the garden?
  • What else is outside, such as seating or lighting?
  • Clear, quick answers usually mean a host who takes care of the tub. Vague ones are worth noting.

How Castle Sunset on the Beach fits

Castle Sunset on the Beach is a clifftop house above Cayton Bay, between Scarborough and Filey, about 10 minutes from each by car. It has a private hot tub in an enclosed garden, so it is for your group only.

Inside, floor-to-ceiling glass looks across the sea to Scarborough Castle [2]. The house sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms, with 2 bathrooms, a games room with a pool table and darts, a fireplace and parking for 3 cars. Up to 2 well-behaved dogs are welcome.

There are honest limits. There is no BBQ, though you can bring a disposable or your own and keep it away from the house. There is no dishwasher. The steep cliff path down to the beach is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.

See the hot tub page for more about the garden, or browse the gallery to see the house.

    Frequently asked questions

Yes. It is a private hot tub in the house's enclosed garden, used only by the people staying.

Can children use a hot tub on holiday?

Only with close adult supervision, every time. If you have questions about the tub at Castle Sunset before you travel, get in touch.

Is a hot tub worth it in winter?

It can be one of the best times to use one. Days are short, so you can be in warm water under a dark sky by late afternoon, then back inside by the fire.

Up to 2 well-behaved dogs are welcome and the garden is enclosed. Keep dogs out of the tub itself and away from it when the cover is off.
