Dog-Friendly Holiday Cottages near Scarborough with an Enclosed Garden
If you are looking for a dog friendly cottage in Scarborough or nearby, the label on the listing is only the start. What matters is whether the place suits your dog. Check how many dogs are allowed, whether the garden is fully enclosed, where you can walk from the door, and what the beach rules are at the time of year you are visiting. A few questions before you book save a lot of stress on arrival.
Check what "dog friendly" really means
Dog friendly can mean different things from one property to the next. Some allow one small dog. Some allow two. Some have rules about which rooms dogs can use or whether they can be left alone.
Before you book, ask:
- How many dogs are allowed, and is there any limit on size?
- Are there rooms dogs should stay out of?
- Can a dog be left in the house for a short time, and if so, how?
- Is there anything the host asks you to bring, such as your dog's own bed or a throw for the sofa?
What a good dog friendly cottage in Scarborough needs outside
An enclosed garden is the single most useful thing for a dog owner on holiday. It means first thing in the morning and last thing at night you can open the door rather than putting on boots and a lead.
"Enclosed" should mean enclosed all the way round, with gates that close properly. Ask the host directly, and mention if your dog is a jumper or a digger. Look at photos of the boundary, not only the lawn.
A garden also gives a dog somewhere to settle after a long walk. A tired dog in a new place often just wants a quiet patch of grass and some time away from the action.
Walks near the house
On this stretch of coast you are spoilt for walks. The Cleveland Way National Trail passes along the clifftops [1], so from a base between Scarborough and Filey you can walk out along the coast path without driving anywhere. Keep dogs on a lead near cliff edges and around livestock, and follow any signs on the route.
The North York Moors are about 20 minutes away by car if you want a change from the sea [2]. Check the National Park's advice for walking with dogs, especially in spring when ground-nesting birds and lambs are about.
Beach rules change by season
Dog access to beaches around Scarborough is not the same everywhere, and it can change through the year. A beach that welcomes dogs in winter may have restrictions on some stretches in summer.
Do not rely on an old post or what you remember from a past visit. Read the signs at the beach entrance each time, and check North Yorkshire Council's website for current information [3]. Carry bags and pick up after your dog on the sand as well as on the path.
How Castle Sunset on the Beach handles dogs
Castle Sunset on the Beach is a clifftop house above Cayton Bay rather than a traditional cottage, and it welcomes up to 2 well-behaved dogs. The garden is enclosed, and it is also where the private hot tub sits, so keep dogs away from the tub when the cover is off.
Scarborough and Filey are each about 10 minutes by car, and the Cleveland Way passes along this coast. A steep cliff path leads down to the big sandy beach at Cayton Bay. It is hard work, particularly on the way back up, and it is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Older dogs may prefer a gentler walk along the top.
There is a washing machine for sandy towels, parking for 3 cars, and a fireplace for drying off on a cold evening. The house sleeps 8, so the whole family and the dogs can come.
The dog-friendly holiday home page has more detail, and the Cayton Bay area guide covers walks and places nearby.
