Where to Stay in Cayton Bay: Holiday Homes Above the Beach
If you are deciding where to stay in Cayton Bay, the short answer is above the beach, on the clifftop, in a self-catering house with its own parking. Cayton Bay sits between Scarborough and Filey, so you get a big sandy surf beach close by and both towns about 10 minutes away by car. Staying up top gives you the sea view and the quiet. The trade-off is the walk down to the sand, and we will be honest about that below.
What Cayton Bay is like
Cayton Bay is a wide, sandy bay on the Yorkshire coast between Scarborough and Filey. It is a surf beach, and there is a surf school on the beach for anyone who wants a lesson. It has a different feel from Scarborough's South Bay: more open sand, less town.
From the clifftop you can look across the water to Scarborough Castle on its headland [1]. On a clear evening the sun goes down over the bay. On 17 August it sets at about 20:28, so there is time for an afternoon on the beach and still be back at the house to watch it.
The Cleveland Way National Trail passes along this coast [2], so you can head out along the clifftops on foot without getting in the car.
Where to stay in Cayton Bay: above the bay or in town?
Most visitors weigh up two options. One is a base in Scarborough or Filey. The other is a house above the bay itself.
Staying in town puts cafés, shops and attractions within walking distance. That suits some trips, especially if nobody wants to drive. It can also mean more noise, busier streets and, in summer, a hunt for somewhere to park.
Staying above Cayton Bay flips that around. Evenings are quieter. You wake up to the sea rather than the street. You are still close to both towns, at about 10 minutes each by car. For groups and families who want a calm base and day trips out, the bay usually works well. For a short break built around restaurants and nights out, a town centre stay may suit you better.
What to check before you book a house above the bay
Holiday homes above Cayton Bay vary, so it pays to ask a few direct questions.
How do you get to the beach? The cliffs here are high. Ask whether there is a path, how steep it is and who it suits. Do not assume "near the beach" means level access.
Where do you park? Ask how many cars fit off the road. If you are arriving in two or three cars, this matters more than almost anything else.
What is the view really like? Photos can be cropped. Ask which rooms face the sea and whether you see it from the main living space or from one small window.
Is there a bus? If some of your group would rather not drive, check where the nearest stop is and where it goes.
What is not included? Ask about a dishwasher, a barbecue, Wi-Fi and laundry so nothing surprises you on arrival.
If you plan to swim or surf, check the sea conditions and beach safety advice first, and follow the lifeguards' flags where they are in place [3].
The cliff path: an honest note
At Castle Sunset on the Beach, a steep cliff path leads down to the sand at Cayton Bay. It is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Coming back up takes effort, particularly with small children, a cool box or a tired dog.
If someone in your group cannot manage it, plan for them to enjoy the view from the house, or drive to a beach with easier access on the day. It is better to know this before you book than to find out on the first morning.
How Castle Sunset on the Beach fits
Castle Sunset on the Beach is a clifftop house above Cayton Bay. Floor-to-ceiling glass looks across the sea to Scarborough Castle, and the sun sets over the bay.
It sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms (two kings and two twins), with two of the bedrooms on the ground floor, and there are 2 bathrooms. There is parking for 3 cars, a private hot tub in an enclosed garden, a games room with a pool table and darts, a fireplace and 300Mbps Starlink Wi-Fi. A bus to Scarborough and Filey stops at the top of the street. Up to 2 well-behaved dogs are welcome.
To be clear about what it does not have: there is no dishwasher and no BBQ. You are welcome to bring a disposable or your own barbecue, as long as you keep it away from the house.
The Cayton Bay area guide covers the beach and nearby places in more detail, and the FAQs answer common questions about the house.
