Autumn Breaks on the Yorkshire Coast: Where to Stay and What to Do

Seasonal
Autumn is a good time for a short break by the sea. Here is where to stay, what to do and how to plan around shorter days on the Yorkshire coast.

An autumn break on the Yorkshire coast works best when you keep it simple: a short stay, a base close to the beach, a good walk each day and a warm house to come back to. Outside the school holidays you can often book just two nights, the beaches are quieter and the sun sets early enough to watch it before dinner. This guide covers where to stay, what to do and how to plan around shorter days.

Autumn break, Yorkshire coast: why it works

Summer brings long days and busy promenades. Autumn is different. Once the schools go back, the towns are calmer and there is more room on the sand. You can walk a beach end to end and see more dog walkers than day trippers.

Short stays are easier too. At Castle Sunset on the Beach the minimum stay outside the holidays is two nights, compared with seven in the summer holidays. That makes a Friday to Sunday break, or a quiet midweek escape, easy to arrange. October half-term is the exception, when the minimum is three nights.

The weather is the honest trade-off. Expect a mix of bright, crisp days, wind and rain, sometimes in the same afternoon. Check the Met Office forecast before you set out each day [1] and pack layers and waterproofs.

Where to stay: between Scarborough and Filey

Cayton Bay sits between Scarborough and Filey, about 10 minutes by car from each. Staying here gives you two towns to explore without having to stay in either. A bus to Scarborough and Filey stops at the top of the street, which helps if you would rather leave the car.

Castle Sunset on the Beach is a clifftop house above the bay. Floor-to-ceiling glass looks across the sea to Scarborough Castle, so even on a wet day the view is part of the stay. It sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms (two kings and two twins), with two bedrooms on the ground floor and 2 bathrooms. There is parking for 3 cars, and 300Mbps Starlink Wi-Fi if someone needs to work for an hour.

Up to 2 well-behaved dogs are welcome, and the garden is enclosed. See the property page for photos and available dates.

Earlier sunsets, and how to plan your day around them

The sun sets noticeably earlier as autumn goes on. At Cayton Bay it sets at about 19:03 on 21 September and about 18:21 on 8 October. After the clocks go back it is down by about 16:39 on 26 October.

That changes how you plan. Do your longer walks and outings in the morning and early afternoon. Later in the month, aim to be back by mid-afternoon so you are not on a cliff path in the dark. The sun sets over the bay, so you can watch it from the house with a cup of tea rather than racing to a viewpoint.

Autumn walks on the coast and moors

The Cleveland Way National Trail passes along this coast [2]. Sections of it make good half-day walks, with the sea on one side and fields on the other. Check the route and conditions on the official trail site before you go, and turn back if the path is wet or the wind picks up.

If you want a change from the sea, the North York Moors National Park is about 20 minutes by car [3]. It is a very different landscape from the coast and makes a good morning out. The National Park website has walking routes and visitor information.

Closer to the house, a steep cliff path leads down to the big sandy beach at Cayton Bay. It is a good morning walk if you are steady on your feet, but it is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Our Cayton Bay area guide has more ideas nearby.

Cosy evenings in

Autumn evenings are long, and that is part of the appeal. At Castle Sunset on the Beach you can light the fire, get out a board game or head to the games room for pool and darts. The private hot tub sits in the enclosed garden, and a soak after a cold, blowy walk is hard to beat. There is more about it on our hot tub page.

A few practical notes. There is no dishwasher, so plan simple meals or share the washing up. There is no BBQ either, though you may bring a disposable or your own and keep it away from the house. The washing machine is handy for muddy walking clothes.

Days out when the weather turns

Rain is part of autumn here, so have a plan B. In Scarborough, SEA LIFE Scarborough and the Rotunda Museum are indoor options, and the Stephen Joseph Theatre has shows through the year. Scarborough Castle is worth saving for a clearer day. Opening times and prices change through the season, so check each official site before you travel.
